Estate Planning in Maryland

Maryland has a state estate tax with a $5 million exemption and an inheritance tax of 10% on transfers to persons other than close relatives (spouse, children, grandchildren, parents, and siblings are exempt). Simple wills cost $500-$1,200, comprehensive plans $2,500-$5,500. Maryland's Orphans' Court handles probate in most counties (Circuit Court in Montgomery and Harford counties). Small estates under $50,000 ($100,000 if surviving spouse is sole heir) qualify for simplified procedures. Maryland allows Transfer on Death deeds.
